See the wildlife hidden inside Moody Gardens' three glass pyramids. The opposite end of the island offers adventures of a different sort. The $60 million project stretches approximately 1,130 feet over the Gulf of Mexico, is more than three football fields in length, and provides the area with family-oriented attractions, including 16 rides, games, retail shops and food venues. The boardwalk-style amusement park stands where the city's original pleasure pier stood from 1943 until 1961, before being destroyed by Hurricane Carla. It's also in this district that you'll find one of the island's best gay clubs, Third Coast Bar which offers great drag shows and other entertainment each week.Ī couple of blocks away, the Texas Seaport Museum and the 1877 Tall Ship Elissa are also popular attractions, as is The Grand 1894 Opera House, which has survived a century of storms and been fully restored.Īlong the seawall, visitors find another homage to the city's past at the Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier. While the island's 32 miles of beaches are an attractive amenity, Galveston's historic architecture is equally popular. Visitors can explore the island's natural wonders, as well as a few of the more man-made ones, year round. Really, Austin is a lot about being gay and liking music in my opinion.Galveston Island's temperate weather and Gulf breezes make the historic beach town a must-visit destination less than an hour from Houston. They are cool ladies worth talking to off stage as well, they pretty much always have a nice word for you, and like to point out fun stuff for you to do in Austin. Worth checking out on their fan page on FB. They really make you feel at home :-)Īlso, Boys on the Inside are playing on Darwins quite a bit. I'm a native Texan and have visited Austin many times.Hi, you forgot Lipstick 24 on 7th street.

If you want to know more about Austin or life in this part of the world, feel free to e-mail me. I may be visiting Austin quite a bit in the near future (see my post in the long-distance relationships thread). I'm a native Texan and have visited Austin many times. But give it a chance and you'll find that the people are some of the nicest you'll find anywhere, there's tons to do (although I think Houston offers more), and the cost of living is cheaper than many other parts of the country. just different in a lot of ways from what you're probably used to. Granted Texas is a big change from Boston or San Francisco but it's really not a bad place. But it's still probably the most liberal of Texas cities and offers a lot. Austin is not a huge city so there isn't a large selection of gay bars and businesses, and no real "gay ghetto" like larger cities have. are several blocks of mostly straight bars of all types. There are also several other gay bars and clubs scattered around. Oil Can Harry's and Boyz Cellar are right next to each other, with Rainbow Cattle Company a block away on 5th and The Forum nearby on Congress. Actually the gay bars in Austin are on most only 4th St.
